Study: How Accurate Are MD's Estimates of Out-of-Pocket Rx Costs?

  1. 52% of physicians accurately estimated costs before the deductible was met.
  2. 62% accurately used coinsurance information.
  3. 61% accurately used copay information.
  4. 57% accurately estimated costs once the out-of-pocket maximum was met.
  5. Only 21% of physicians answered all 4 questions correctly.

This survey study of 371 primary care physicians, gastroenterologists, and rheumatologists sought to determine whether physicians can accurately estimate out-of-pocket expenses when they are given all of the necessary information about a drug’s price and a patient’s insurance plan.
